My staple summer wardrobe

As much as I consider myself a winter gal, there is no better feeling than when summer arrives and you can step up your outfit game. It’s time to ditch the layers and heavy woollen jumpers, and get ready for the sun!

I’m very much a clothes enthusiast, but I am guilty of living in the same pair of jeans/shorts and t-shirts in the summer. I’ve started to build up my summer 2017 wardrobe in the hope that my outfits get braver and more varied, and here are the trends I’m loving so far.

Skinny fit trousers are out this year, and it’s time to embrace the flare! I’m absolutely loving culottes right now, particularly this bright mustard pair from New Look . Pair with a stripy top, or even a light weight jumper for those chilly British summer days. I love that these trousers can be dressed up with a pair of heels or worn casually with trainers or boots.
The ultimate maxi dress

Being a very short human, I normally shy away from any kind of maxi-length cut because I find it only highlights my shortness. But when I saw my sister-in-law wearing this stunning mesh number (again from New Look) , I knew I had to have it! I love that this dress can be worn in so many different ways, and that the mesh detailing gives it that little edge. You could wear this dress with Doc Martens and a shirt tied around the waist, or you could dress it up with heels and jewellery. The under dress is just shorter than the outer mesh dress, giving it lots of texture and plenty of outfit choices!

Embroidered jeans

No matter where fashion may lead us, we always come back to our old favourite blue jeans. I still have jeans that I wore when I was a size 6, and I’ve managed to stretch them and keep them for years because they are comfy and familiar (and I’m a hoarder). Embroidered jeans have been a big trend for the past few years, and I can’t see them going out of fashion for a long time… and even if they do I’ll still wear them! My favourite jeans for this season are the ripped floral jeans from Next , which are perfect for casual days paired with an over-sized tee. I’m also loving the patterned Pom Pom detail on these Topshop jeans (find similar ones here).

Asda favourites
It wouldn’t be my staple wardrobe without some Asda pieces, and these three items are probably my favourite yet! The embroidered shorts and wide-leg palazzo pants are both ideal for a heat-wave as they are made from 100% cotton and therefor very lightweight. I love the simplicity of these bottoms, and how you could pair them with anything from flip flops to stilettos and they’d still look great! The Asda linen mini dress is also a must have for this season , and proves that sometimes simple is best! I’ve paired this dress with a floral kimono, but you could rock it with a denim or leather jacket, and alternate shoes and jewellery to go from a day to evening look.
Levi skirt
Levi is one of those timeless brands that always deliver, so when I saw a pair of Levi’s jeans transformed into the perfect denim skirt in Urban Outfitters, obviously I HAD to buy it! I tend to buy a new denim skirt every year, so I was more than happy to pay a little extra (£40) for one I knew would be good quality denim as well as fitting me like a glove in the best way. I always tend to opt for a simple but grungy look, so this skirt paired with the SASS tee from Miss Selfridge was just the thing to channel my denim diva. I love adding a splash of colour to all-black outfits such as a bold mustard jacket (from Zara) or a vibrant pair of shoes!
Gingham dreams (and jeans)
Gingham is the pattern this summer, and you’ll be seeing this print across the highstreet. Gingham can be a difficult pattern to mix with other clothes, so I always opt for super-simple co-ordination. The gingham jeans are some oldies but goldies from Miss Selfridge and I absolutely love wearing these with a plain black jumper, or white oversized tee. The picnic skirt from River Island is going to be my go-to piece this summer, as the skirt is so understated and moves wonderfully when you walk! I paired it with a novelty white tee, but it would also look fab with a lace blouse or linen shirt.
Bring on those lazy, hazy, and fashion-filled days of summer! Slay with whatever you wear, and never be afraid to take a risk. A year ago you’d have never got me in a skirt, and now I’m living in them!
